Teeth Grinding/Teeth Clenching (Bruxism)

Bruxism or grinding of teeth is a common problem that will happen to everyone at some point in their life. Sometimes, the problems may be transient in nature or occur at a particular stressful point in their lives, other times, the problem may continue and become a part of the patient’s everyday habits (clenching teeth during the day).

Current research has not elicited the exact cause of the grinding and bruxism, some have proposed that it is related to a patient’s personality, genetics, consumption of caffeine and alcohol and even particular medicines.

What causes grinding/bruxism?

Regarding the cause, grinding and bruxism is a serious issue when other symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, joint pains, muscle pains around the jaw area are also reported. Sometimes the bed partner can even be woken by this problem!

What can be done about bruxism?

At Epping High Dental, we will be able to assist you in identifying if you are possible suffering from this problem. Oftentimes, general awareness, rest and avoidance of particular foods may be sufficient. More severe bruxism problems can be managed with custom made grinding guards worn at night (occlusal splints). If there is a need to restore the original teeth to their original form, a comprehensive treatment plan incorporating multi-disciplinary specialist may be required.

What happens if it’s left untreated?

Untreated grinding and bruxing of teeth will lead to severe dental problems due to the excessive wear and possible breakage of teeth at risk. Patient suffering from years of grinding often have a “shorten facial appearance” as the normal bite dimensions have reduced over the years. If there are any restorative fillings present, these often prematurely break down and chip and break earlier than expected.
